I used to be a newspaper editor and reporter, where I interviewed influential leaders like Joe Biden, Roger Ebert and Patch Adams. I followed murder investigations, lunched with Senators and appeared live on prime­time MSNBC. It was exhilarating work, but it wasn’t enough. Something was missing.

In 2008 I quit my job and sold all my worldly possessions. For the next two-and-a-half years, my boyfriend and I traveled to about 20 coun­tries across the Mid­dle East, Asia, and Europe, aver­ag­ing roughly one month per coun­try (plus a longer stint in Australia).

During that time, my friends kept saying: “I’d love to do that, but I can’t afford it.”

I cringe when I hear that. It’s simply not true.

I was born a hundred miles from Mt. Everest in a little Himalayan country called Nepal. My parents and I immigrated to the U.S. back when I was diaper-clad and drooling.

My dad taught classes at the local college; my mom stayed at home to raise me. Believe me: I was not born rich.

Today I’m a real estate investor, an online entrepreneur, an award-winning jour­nal­ist, and I con­tin­ue to travel frequently.

When I’m not wandering the world, I’m based in Atlanta, but I designed my life to be “location independent” (I can work from anywhere on the planet with an internet connection).
